Two Arrested in Jammu and Kashmir for Alleged Comments on Babri Masjid Demolition

Babri Masjid

On the auspicious day of the consecration of the Ram temple, January 22, two individuals were apprehended in Jammu and Kashmir for purportedly making comments concerning the demolition of the Babri Masjid. Reports indicate that cases were registered in various districts including Rajouri, Reasi, Ramban, and Kathua within the Jammu division, leading to the detention of six individuals.

According to The Telegraph, one of the accused has been identified as Zaffar Hussain, a resident of Khanna Chargal village in the Jammu district. The second individual, reportedly a female college student, has not been officially arrested, although her family refuted claims of her detention. They clarified to The Telegraph that while she has been booked, she remains free pending further legal proceedings. Additionally, they mentioned that several other youths have been taken in for questioning, with bail applications already filed in court on their behalf.

Sources close to the families disclosed that both individuals, particularly the girl, shared sentiments of disappointment over the demolition of the Babri Masjid and the subsequent construction of a temple on its site. It is believed that the detained duo had expressed their sentiments online, prompting legal action against them.

The incident highlights the ongoing sensitivities surrounding religious matters, particularly in regions like Jammu and Kashmir where tensions often run high. The Babri Masjid demolition remains a deeply contentious issue in India’s socio-political landscape, and expressions of dissent or criticism related to it can quickly escalate into legal ramifications.

Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the arrests, but the situation underscores the need for balanced discourse and respect for diverse opinions, especially on sensitive topics entwined with historical and religious significance. As the legal process unfolds, stakeholders will closely monitor developments to ensure justice is served while upholding the principles of freedom of speech and expression.
