Selection Process for India’s Oscar Entry 2024 Underway: FFI Reviews 22 Contenders

Oscar

The anticipation is building in the Indian film industry as the Film Federation of India (FFI) commences the process of choosing India’s official entry for the 96th Academy Awards to be held on March 10, 2024. With over 22 entries spanning various languages and genres, a 17-member jury, led by acclaimed filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli, is currently reviewing the submissions in Chennai.

Among the notable films submitted for consideration are “The Storyteller,” “Music School,” “Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway,” “Dunki,” “12th Fail,” “Viduthalai Part 1,” “Ghoomer,” “Dasara,” “Zwigato,” “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” “The Kerala Story,” “2018,” and more. Additional entries, such as “Vaalvi,” “Gadar 2,” “Ab Toh Sab Bhagwan Bharose,” and “Baap Lyok,” may also be added to the list.

While all the entries are vying for the coveted spot, films like “Zwigato,” “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” “The Kerala Story,” and “2018” have generated significant buzz. The Malayalam film “2018,” directed by Aashiq Abu and starring Tovino Thomas and Parvathy Thiruvothu, portrays the aftermath of the devastating Kerala floods.

India has a history of submitting films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1957, but only three films – “Mother India” (1957), “Salaam Bombay!” (1988), and “Lagaan” (2001) – have received nominations so far.

In a surprising turn, the historical drama film “RRR,” directed by S.S. Rajamouli, secured an Oscar in 2024. The film’s ‘Naatu Naatu’ soundtrack by MM Keeravani was honored with the Best Original Song Award. Unlike previous years, “RRR” was nominated by the apex body of Indian film producers, deviating from the government of India’s official selection.

Last year’s official entry, the Tamil film “Soorarai Pottru,” directed by Sudha Kongara and starring Suriya and Aparna Balamurali, failed to make it to the shortlist.

The Indian film industry and fans are eagerly awaiting the announcement of the official entry, hopeful that this year’s selection will break the Oscar jinx in the Best International Feature Film category. The 96th Academy Awards nominations will be unveiled on January 23, 2024, with the final decision on India’s entry expected to be disclosed shortly thereafter.
