Rahul Gandhi Granted Bail in Defamation Case, Continues Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was granted bail on Tuesday in a defamation case dating back to August 2018. The case, filed by a BJP leader, alleged that Gandhi made derogatory remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a conference in Bengaluru.

The District Civil Court in Sultanpur had issued a summons to Gandhi just 36 hours earlier, instructing him to appear before it regarding the defamation case filed by the BJP leader in 2018. Despite the legal proceedings, Gandhi remained undeterred, affirming his commitment to the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

In a statement posted on the social media platform ‘X’, Gandhi asserted, “Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will not be derailed. Rahul Gandhi will not be silenced. The Indian National Congress will not be intimidated.”

The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, now in its 38th day, continues its journey, starting from Fursantganj in Amethi district and heading towards Raebareli and Lucknow. Gandhi, speaking to ANI, confirmed the resumption of the yatra after a brief pause, with plans for a public rally in Raebareli followed by progression towards Lucknow.

The defamation case against Gandhi was brought forward by Vijay Mishra, the then BJP District Vice President, who expressed his grievance over Gandhi’s alleged accusations against Amit Shah. Mishra stated, “Rahul Gandhi had accused Amit Shah in Bengaluru that he is a murderer. When I heard these allegations, I felt very pained because I am a 33-year-old worker of the party.”

Santosh Kumar Pandey, representing Vijay Mishra in court, highlighted the severity of the allegations, stating that if sufficient evidence is found against Gandhi, he could face a maximum punishment of 2 years.

The case stems from remarks made by Gandhi during the Karnataka elections in Bengaluru in 2018, which led to the filing of the defamation complaint against him. The legal proceedings have continued for almost five years, culminating in Gandhi’s recent summons by the District Civil Court in Sultanpur.

Despite the legal challenges, the Congress’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra persists, with the aim of covering 6,700 km through 15 states, as the Lok Sabha polls loom on the horizon. The yatra, a significant campaign effort by the Congress party, underscores their commitment to connect with the people across various regions of India.
