Kerala Youth Congress President Arrested Amidst Claims of Political Vendetta

In a surprising turn of events, Rahul Mamkootathil, the Kerala Youth Congress President, was arrested yesterday for his involvement in protests against the Left government. The arrest has sparked widespread condemnation, with critics labeling it as a targeted move to suppress dissent.

Rahul Mamkootathil’s recent activities have drawn attention as he led protests against the state government and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM). His arrest, however, has raised eyebrows due to the timing and alleged lack of adherence to proper legal procedures.

Mamkootathil’s mother expressed skepticism about the circumstances surrounding the arrest, stating, “Rahul was at the KIMS Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram for a week until day before yesterday, and he was in Kollam yesterday. If they had wanted to arrest him then, they could have. This is nothing but a planned move.”

Indian Youth Congress president BV Srinivas denounced the arrest, terming it an assault on democracy. Srinivas took to social media, posting, “‘Arresting Rahul Mamkootathil, Kerala Youth Congress President, for protesting against the state govt & CPM is an assault on democracy. Peaceful dissent is a right, not a crime. Kerala govt, stop targeting opposition & unleashing political vendetta!'”

The abrupt arrest triggered protest marches by Congress and Youth Congress workers in various parts of the state, including Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kannur, Malappuram, and Alappuzha. Congress MLA PC Vishnunadh criticized the government and the police for suppressing protests, emphasizing that such actions go against democratic principles.

Vishnunadh alleged that Mamkootathil’s arrest was a result of a political vendetta orchestrated by the state government. He claimed that the arrest did not adhere to basic Supreme Court guidelines and accused the government of employing tactics reminiscent of fascist regimes.

Drawing a parallel between the state government and national politics, Vishnunadh accused the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government of emulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s approach, stating, “The state government has taken a leaf out of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s and BJP’s playbook. If the LDF (Left Democratic Front) thinks they can suppress protests by arresting leaders, they will soon realize their folly. Congress protests will continue with even more fervor.”

As the political tensions escalate, the arrest of Rahul Mamkootathil has become a focal point in the ongoing power struggle between the ruling Left government and the opposition Congress party in Kerala.
