IIT Hyderabad to aid Telangana authorities GST-fraud probe

Hyderabad: The Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad, has announced that it will continue to supply any information needed from time to time and will offer Telangana Commercial Taxes officers all assistance available in their probe into the most recent GST fraud that the department has uncovered.

The government of Telangana had approved a project at IIT Hyderabad (IIT-H) on “big data analytics and value-added tax data” on July 12, 2017, initially for one year, which was extended annually.

The project team have been continuously providing analytical reports to the Telangana government, business-required documents on the data provided by government officials, the statement said.

IIT-H carried out this undertaking with honesty, just like any other sponsored research effort. The announcement also stated that IIT-H will continue to give all information as needed and will offer the commercial tax officials all assistance feasible.

According to reports, G. Kishan Reddy, the Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, has voiced grave concerns about the IIT-H’s involvement in the GST fraud that included over Rs 1000 crore.

In response to accusations in the media, he had written to Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Minister of Education, asking him to investigate the possible involvement of certain IIT-H officials in the GST fraud.

The CT department authorities had addressed a letter to the Director of IIT-H, requesting details on the role of specific officials in the inadequacies identified by a senior CT officer.
