In a significant operation, officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Hyderabad Zonal Unit intercepted two passengers bound for Dubai at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on January 10, seizing 5569.64 carats of diamonds valued at Rs 6.03 crore.

The news of this major bust emerged on Friday, January 12, when the DRI released a press statement detailing the operation. Alongside the precious gemstones, the authorities also confiscated a sum of Rs 9.8 lakh in foreign currency and Rs 1 lakh in Indian currency from the suspects.

Upon closer inspection of the passengers’ luggage, DRI officials uncovered the diamonds cleverly concealed in sealed plastic bags, disguised within chocolate packets covered with white paper. The elaborate attempt to smuggle the valuable gemstones raised eyebrows, leading to the immediate detention of the two individuals.

The identities of the detained passengers have not been disclosed as the investigation is ongoing. The DRI is working tirelessly to trace the origins and destination of the seized diamonds, examining any potential links to organized smuggling networks.

The incident underscores the vigilance and efficiency of the DRI in safeguarding the country’s economic interests and preventing illicit activities related to the cross-border movement of valuables. Authorities are now focused on unraveling the intricate details of the smuggling operation and determining the motive behind the attempt to transport the diamonds to Dubai.

Officials have expressed their commitment to taking stringent action against those involved in the illegal trade of precious gems and currency. The DRI will collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and to bring the culprits to justice.

As the investigation unfolds, the authorities will continue to monitor the situation closely, sending a stern message that attempts to undermine the country’s economic integrity will be met with swift and decisive action.
