Diljit Dosanjh was worried about legal action from Imtiaz Ali over Amar Singh Chamkila film

At a recent event in Mumbai, Diljit Dosanjh discussed his new film Amar Singh Chamkila directed by Imtiaz Ali. The singer-actor shared his initial worries, fearing legal repercussions from Imtiaz for fictionalising the story of the legendary Punjabi singer. Diljit confessed to doubting the project’s viability before meeting the director.

Diljit Dosanjh admitted that before meeting Imtiaz Ali, he was sure about his knowledge of Amar Singh Chamkila. However, after finding out about Bollywood’s intentions to make a biopic on Chamkila, he wondered about their approach, thinking, “We will make it.” Because of rights issues, they ended up making a fictional film called Jodi.

When the pandemic hit, Jodi was unable to be released. Instead, Diljit received an unexpected call from Imtiaz Ali. Anticipating possible legal consequences related to the rights issue, he was taken aback when Imtiaz showed interest in casting him in his movie about the singer.

He said, “I got a call from Imtiaz sir. I thought he would sue us, as he had the rights. We didn’t have it. But he said that he wanted to cast me in the film.”

He shared how he was persuaded to join Imtiaz’s film due to its fresh approach, different from “Jodi.” He found the focus on Chamkila intriguing, a new angle for him. The film’s music, crafted by AR Rahman, sung by Mohit Chauhan, and penned by Irshad Kamil, left him amazed.

He further highlighted Chamkila’s exceptional skills as a songwriter, composer, and singer. Seeing Chamkila’s story depicted on a large scale was profound for him. When Imtiaz presented him with the film opportunity, Dosanjh fully embraced the director’s vision.

The film’s soundtrack primarily includes Punjabi songs reflecting Chamkila’s music style, with Hindi songs subtly enhancing the storytelling. Parineeti Chopra plays a key role as Amar Singh Chamkila’s wife, Amarjot Kaur, a talented singer who often worked alongside her husband. The tragic assassination of Chamkila, Kaur, and their band in March 1988 is also depicted in the film. The film is slated to release on April 12.
