BJP MPs Gautam Gambhir, Jayant Sinha ask party chief to relieve them of electoral duties

Bharatiya Janata Party MPs Gautam Gambhir and Jayant Sinha on Saturday said they have asked party chief JP Nadda to relieve them of their electoral duties.

Gambhir, a cricketer-turned-politician, represents East Delhi in the Lok Sabha.

He said in a social media post that he has asked to be relieved of his political duties so that he could focus on his cricketing commitments.

The announcement comes ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, during which the BJP in Delhi will take on the Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress.

Gambhir joined the BJP in March 2019, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections that were held that year. He defeated Arvinder Singh Lovely of the Congress and Atishi of the Aam Aadmi Party and was elected as the MP from East Delhi.

Sinha, who has been the MP from Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh constituency since 2014, said on Saturday that he wants to focus his efforts on “combating global climate change”.

Sinha had served as the Union minister of state for finance and civil aviation in the Narendra Modi government’s first term.
