BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Ganpat Gaikwad and two of his associates were arrested on Saturday following a shocking incident at a police station in Ulhasnagar, Maharashtra. According to reports from PTI, Gaikwad allegedly shot at Mahesh Gaikwad, a leader of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, amidst a heated confrontation over a land dispute.
The BJP and the Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, despite being allies in Maharashtra’s coalition government, found themselves at odds in this troubling episode that unfolded on Friday night in Thane district.
Initial accounts suggest that the confrontation escalated when Ganpat Gaikwad’s son visited the police station to file a complaint regarding the land dispute. Mahesh Gaikwad arrived at the scene with his supporters, leading to tensions. Subsequently, Ganpat Gaikwad and his supporters entered the police station around 9:30 pm, as reported by The Indian Express.

The situation quickly spiraled out of control as supporters from both factions clashed outside the police station. Allegedly, amidst the chaos, Ganpat Gaikwad opened fire at Mahesh Gaikwad and his aides, leaving them injured. Security camera footage shared on social media captured the harrowing moment when the BJP MLA allegedly discharged his firearm.
Mahesh Gaikwad sustained critical injuries and underwent surgery, with reports indicating that five bullets were removed from his body. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police Sudhakar Pathare confirmed that arrests have been made and efforts are underway to apprehend additional suspects.
In a startling development, Ganpat Gaikwad admitted to firing the shots, justifying his actions by claiming that his son was being assaulted in front of the police. He expressed no remorse for his actions, further alleging that the state’s Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, is fostering a culture of criminality in Maharashtra.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis labeling it as serious and ordering a high-level inquiry. Fadnavis emphasized the principle of equality before the law, regardless of political affiliations, in addressing the matter.
As investigations unfold, the incident underscores the fragile dynamics within political alliances and the imperative of upholding the rule of law in the face of such conflicts.
