The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday alleged that jailed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was deliberately making attempts to raise his blood sugar level by eating mangoes & sweets and taking tea with sugar, so that he could the same as a ground to secure bail on medical grounds.
Appearing for the national agency, Advocate Zoheb Hossain apprised Special Judge Kaveri Baweja Kejriwal was given permission to have home-cooked food in jail because he claimed to be a high-diabetic patient. However, the accused was having mangoes, sweets and sugar with tea. This was a basis to create a ground for bail, added Hossain.
He said the details came to be known after the agency wrote to Tihar jail and sought information about Kejriwal’s diet and the medicines being taken by him.
The Rouse Avenue Court was hearing Kejriwal’s petition seeking regular check-up of his sugar level and consultation with his regular doctor through video conference. The Special Judge today sought a report from Tihar Jail about the diet chart of Kejriwal.
Representing Kejriwal, Advocate Vivek Jain objected to the submissions made by ED and said that the investigating agency was making these allegations only for the media.
Jain further said that he was withdrawing the present application and would file a better one.
The national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is currently lodged in Tihar jail in connection with a money laundering probe related to the Delhi liqour policy case.
His lawyers had informed the Rouse Avenue Court that his sugar levels had dropped to 46 and were continuously fluctuating.
ED had arrested Kejriwal on March 21 from his Delhi residence, hours after the Delhi High Court denied him protection from corecive action by the federal agency.
He was arrested under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on allegations of being the ‘key conspirator’ in a money laundering case related to the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.
On March 22, Kejriwal was produced by ED before Special Judge Baweja, who initially remanded him to ED custody till March 28. His custody was later extended to April 1.
On April 1, the Rouse Avenue Court sent Kejriwal to judicial custody till today.
The Special Judge had earlier dismissed Kejriwal’s plea to have five meetings with his legal team in Tihar Jail, instead of current two.
While sending Kejriwal to judicial custody on April 1, the trial court allowed him to carry books and have home-cooked meal, along with certain other facilities.
