Apple has announced that its World Wide Developer Conference will take place from June 9 through June 13 at Apple Park in Cupertino, California. Again this year, Apple is making the event available entirely online, and available to all developers for free. It’s likely that there will be a small in-person audience at Apple Park if there is hardware being announced.
In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about WWDC, including what it is, what will be announced, and so much more.
What is WWDC?
WWDC stands for World Wide Developer Conference, which is Apple’s annual developer conference that it has held since 1987. It has been held in various venues across the Bay Area since its inception in 1987. Starting out at the Santa Clara Convention Center, then moving to the San Jose Convention Center, and then the Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco. It went back to the San Jose Convention Center in 2017 until the pandemic in 2020 shut it all down.
Now, WWDC is held at Apple Park. And it’s really just the keynote that kicks off the conference, with all the sessions being available online and filmed ahead of time.
2025 marks Apple’s 36th annual World Wide Developer Conference or WWDC.
Typically, at WWDC, Apple will announce the next versions of each software platform that it has. And sometimes, we will see some new hardware. It is quite common to see new hardware, but it doesn’t happen every single year. So do keep that in mind here.
Remember that WWDC is a developer’s conference, so they do announce quite a few things specifically for developers. This is where Apple is able to court developers to get them to develop their platform. And also provide new tools to make that job easier. As well as making money from it.
When is WWDC 2025?
As it has been for many years, WWDC is taking place in the second week of June. That’ll be June 9-13, 2025.
It’ll take place at Apple Park, similar to 2023 and 2024. It’s really just the keynote that will be at Apple Park, as the sessions will all be virtual. The good thing here is that developers don’t have to scramble to get tickets and pay $1,599 to attend. Instead, it’s free to everyone.
Apple has just confirmed that the keynote will begin at 10 AM PT/1 PM ET on June 9.
What announcements are expected at WWDC 2025?
There are some things that we know will be announced at WWDC 2023, like iOS 18 and iPad OS 18. But there are also a few surprises that many are expecting to see. So that’s what we’ll go over here.
iOS 19 and iPadOS 19
iOS 19 is supposedly going to be a huge redesign for the iPhone, which we’ve heard every year since iOS 7 when Apple last redesigned iOS. Though, this year, we’ve seen a lot more leaks about what the redesign will look like.
Apple is said to be taking inspiration from visionOS and will bring that to the rest of its platforms. Giving users the same sort of experience whether they are on iPhone, iPad, Mac or Vision Pro.
This design includes a sort of glassy look, with a floating design for buttons. The icons could also be changing for the first time, and be more of a circular design, versus the squircle that we’ve had since the very beginning.
macOS 16
There hasn’t been a whole lot of talk about macOS 16 just yet, but we do know that Apple is planning to also redesign it, to be more cohesive with the rest of its platforms.
Other updates
We’re still about a month out from WWDC, but we do expect to see updates to its other platforms, like watchOS 12, and visionOS 3. We also expect to hear some updates about Apple Intelligence, even though it’s had a pretty rocky road since it debuted last year at WWDC.
Apple Intelligence is still barely available on the iPhone, and Siri has been delayed another year. So hopefully Apple can share some good news about the AI features it plans to roll out.
Hardware updates
It seems to be completely random if Apple releases new hardware at WWDC. Sometimes, we’ll get a new mac or two, sometimes a new iPad, and sometimes just the announcement of a brand new product – like Vision Pro in 2023.
It is plausible that we could see a new Mac announced at WWDC, but the only one that would make sense is a Mac Pro. As the rest of the Mac lineup has been updated for M4 already. But when it comes to Apple and new Macs, never say never.
Apple could also introduce a new iPad Pro. Last year’s model was announced about a month before WWDC, though Apple does typically stick to 18-month cycles for the iPad. So we might not get a new one until the Fall.
Finally, we could see a new HomePod with a display. This product has been rumored for a few years now actually, so Apple has to be close to releasing it. And honestly, announcing it at a developer conference would be perfect. Get developers on-board updating their apps for the display on a new HomePod, before it actually releases later in the year (or next year, like Vision Pro did).
Either way, this year, we are expecting the redesign of iOS, iPadOS and macOS to take center-stage in Cupertino.
