Incident Overview

The accident took place on the Dezhou-Shangrao Highway in the Anhui Province of China. According to reports, the Xiaomi SU7 that was involved in the crash was operating in Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) mode, and was moving at a speed of 116 km/h when it approached a construction zone.

The lane was, at the time, closed off with barriers, diverting traffic flow into the opposite lane. The system detected the obstacle, issued an alert, and then began decelerating. However, the driver took manual control of the vehicle, continued braking and steering, but unfortunately collided with a concrete barrier at about 97 km/h, erupting into flames.

Xiaomi’s emergency response system was activated automatically, with the company contacting the EV’s registered owner immediately, who confirmed that the car was being operated by someone else at the time. Emergency responders arrived at the scene promptly, but despite rescue efforts, the crash resulted in the deaths of three female university students.

The company added that the fire was caused due to severe damage resulting from the collision, rather than spontaneous combustion. It was discovered later that two of the victims had perished in the fire, while the third had been rescued by emergency responders through a smashed window, but succumbed due to her injuries.

Xiaomi’s Response

Xiaomi has demonstrated an impeccable level of responsibility and transparency in regard to the accident. Shortly after the incident, the company issued a detailed timeline explaining the events leading up to the crash. The report reaffirmed that the SU7’s autonomous driving system functioned as it was designed, issuing timely alerts and initiating deceleration before the driver took control.

Furthermore, Xiaomi emphasized that all SU7 models are equipped with emergency release handles on all four doors, designed to allow passengers to exit the vehicle in the event of a battery failure. However, eyewitnesses from the scene of the accident claim that the doors could not be unlocked, potentially complicating rescue efforts.

The company has acknowledged these concerns and is working closely with investigators to determine what caused the issue. Xiaomi has also reiterated that its safety systems have been put through rigorous testing, meeting every standard, before the vehicle’s launch. They also claim that further improvements will be implemented if necessary.

Xiaomi’s Safety Measures and Business Impact

Xiaomi stated that they have set up a task force to cooperate with the police investigation is Tongling, and on March 31st, submitted to the police the vehicle driving data and system operation information they had obtained. Precautionary actions and technologies such as the safety measures present in a vehicle are crucial in the automotive industry, as they play a vital role in preventing accidents and ensuring passenger security.

The company remains committed to refining and improving the SU7 and future EV models, doubling down on its dedication to ongoing software and hardware enhancements to ensure maximum safety and reliability.

Before this accident, Xiaomi had already been taking steps to provide the best level of vehicle safety. Earlier this year, they identified a software issue affecting the intelligent parking assistance function in almost 30,931 SU7 EVs. This issue, related to timing synchronization, could cause minor collision risks during parking, and Xiaomi quickly responded by issuing an over-the-air software update to rectify the problem.

Xiaomi currently, has two versions of their smart driving systems on their SU7 EVs. The higher-end is a LiDAR-mounted version, which, as opposed to the pure vision version, allows for urban navigation features such as collision avoidance and special vehicle recognition. Xiaomi has said that the car involved in the accident was a standard version, implying that the vehicle had less advanced smart driving technology, functioning without LiDAR.

Additionally, Xiaomi has been investing in advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and AI-powered hazard detection technologies to further improve accident prevention. The company’s primary goal is to create one of the safest and most user-friendly autonomous driving systems in the industry.

Market analysts noted that such fluctuations are common after high-profile incidents, however, the accident poses a setback for Xiaomi’s ambitions in the EV market.

While the accident involving the Xiaomi SU7 is undoubtedly tragic, the company has provided a swift response, affirming that the safety of its customers is its top priority. By addressing concerns head-on, Xiaomi plans to reinforce trust among consumers and industry observers alike. The SU7 EV is a significant milestone when it comes to Xiaomi’s journey into the electric vehicle market, and it is certain that the company will do what is necessary to provide what is best for its customers.
