
Police have arrested a 25-year-old woman who worked as a domestic help after seizing MD drug (mephedrone) valued at Rs 14 lakh from her in Maharashtra`s Thane district, officials said on Thursday, reported news agency PTI.
Naushin Mainuddin Sheikh, resident of Mumbra, was apprehended on Tuesday evening while she was found moving in a suspicious manner on a road near a defunct hotel in Ulhasnagar, an official from Hill Line police station said, reported PTI.
She was stopped and during checking, the police found her in possession of 71.03 grams of MD (mephedrone), a synthetic drug banned under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he said.
The estimated market value of the seized contraband is Rs 14,31,120, the official said, reported PTI.
During her interrogation, the accused claimed she had procured the drug for sale from a resident of Nalasopara in neighbouring Palghar district and efforts were on to nab him, he said, reported PTI.
A case was registered against the accused under relevant sections of the NDPS Act.
“We are currently investigating the source of the contraband and its intended recipients,” the official added.
Shopkeeper held with Rs 1.8 lakh drugs in Mumbai
In another case, the police on Wednesday arrested a paan shopkeeper for allegedly selling MD drug and recovered the contraband valued at Rs 1.84 lakh from him, officials said, reported PTI.
The 48-year-old accused, Manwar Jamirullah Ansari, operated his shop at Tagore Nagar in Vikhroli area, a police official said, reported PTI.
Based on a credible information, the police laid a trap near his outlet and caught him red-handed while selling the drug, he said.
The police seized 92 grams of MD, valued at Rs 1.84 lakh from his possession, the official said, reported PTI.
A case was registered against the accused under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and further investigation was underway, the police added.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Customs has arrested a traveller at the international airport here for allegedly trying to smuggle 15 kg of hydroponic weed with an estimated value of Rs 14.73 crore, officials said.
The contraband was concealed in a packet labelled as “Diplomatic Pouch of Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)”, officials said on Sunday.
The traveller had landed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport from Bangkok, an official said.
