More than four months after the death of police constable Pravin Suryawanshi, the Wadala TT Police have arrested his wife and their software engineer son. The two have been booked on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. As per the medical report, the deceased had 38 injuries on his body.
Investigations have revealed that the constable was allegedly not providing any financial support to his wife and son. There were also ongoing disputes over allegedly transferring ownership of residential properties located in Kalyan and Nashik to their names. Following his death, Pravin’s brother and three sisters had raised suspicions of foul play.
Pravin`s wife, Smita Suryawanshi (42), and son, Pratik Suryawanshi (22), have been booked under Sections 105 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Their arrest was carried out on Tuesday night, confirmed Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4) Ragasudha R. After a preliminary inquiry, the Wadala TT Police themselves became the complainant in the case.
As per FIR, the incident occurred on May 9, 2025, at the police housing quarters in Pratiksha Nagar, Sion (East). Pravin Suryawanshi was found injured around 10:30 p.m. He was rushed to Sion Hospital with the help of Wadala TT Police, where he was declared dead.
Initially, on June 13, the Wadala TT Police had registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR). Statements were recorded from Pravin’s brother Suresh and sisters Mangala, Kavita, and Sunita, all of whom expressed doubts about the circumstances surrounding his death, said the officer.
The post-mortem report stated the cause of death as “haemorrhage and shock due to multiple injuries over the body,” classifying it as an unnatural death. Viscera samples were preserved for further analysis.
Statements from both Smita and Pratik were recorded, but alleged contradictions came to light. Upon further investigation, police learned that there had been ongoing domestic disputes between Smita and Pravin. They had allegedly argued even on the day of his death. A few days prior, Smita had reportedly gone to the Shivaji Nagar Police Station, where Pravin was posted, and created a scene, said the officer.
As per complaint, on the night of the incident, while Pravin lay injured at home, Pratik allegedly went downstairs to smoke a cigarette at a roadside stall instead of helping his father.
In their version of events, the accused told police that Pravin was attempting suicide, and during the struggle, the window glass broke, causing injuries to his hand as they tried to intervene. However, bloodstains were allegedly found in two separate areas of the house, prompting police to suspect that he may have been pushed or attacked, resulting in injuries to his head and hand, said the officer.
Furthermore, police suspect that the delay in taking Pravin to the hospital may have contributed to his death. Based on these findings, Wadala TT Police arrested Smita and Pratik on Tuesday night, said the officer.
