The only surprise about Mohammed Salah’s contract is that it took so long for both the club and their talisman to reach an agreement. Nonetheless, it could not have arrived at a better time, as Liverpool are on their last push to grab the league title, wherein Salah had donned the titular role with aplomb.
Little doubt that the extension was richly deserved. It has been Salah’s season. Not just his haul of 32 goals and 22 assists in 45 games, but his sheer ability to inspire his team has been valuable for the Reds’ sprint. When Liverpool claimed the title last time, in 2020, he was one part of a magnificent attacking trifecta with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino. But this time, it was largely his own attacking verve that has turbocharged his team’s title quest. Rest of the attacking players in the squad were either wasteful or prone to injuries or just flat-lined. It was, more often than not, down to him to inspire.
This was Salah’s season of renaissance too. Last year, he had seemed rusty at times, sparking speculation that he would soon commit himself to the riches in Saudi Arabia. But he has returned sharper and fitter. Under a manager who freed him upfront in Arne Slot, who was not as insistent on pressing as Jurgen Klopp, Salah flourished, regaining his zip and snap.
His critics would say he turns 33 at the start of the next season, could potentially slow down and deter Slot’s rebuilding process. But Salah, incredibly, looks the most agile he has been in the last few years. Besides, Slot has been using him adeptly, and he could be his ideal figurehead in times of transition. He ensures goals and assists, wields influence, and inspires his teammates. It’s the perfect wedding, a divorce that either party would not have been able to get over.
