Jaws is a 1975 American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg. Last week, it turned 50. The film is considered one of the most terrifying movies made anywhere in the world.
Jaws redefined horror-thrillers by proving suspense could be more terrifying than graphic violence. Its technique was unique. Steven Spielberg struggled with the mechanical shark he had to shoot with, forcing him to shoot much of the film without showing the creature.
To explain it more clearly, the director had planned to show the mechanical shark as the real shark throughout the film. But since the mechanical shark malfunctioned during the shoot, he changed the script on the go! He decided not to show the shark but to just suggest it. This limitation turned out to be the film’s biggest asset! Because the audience’ fears emanated not from the actual visuals but from their imagination about how the shark would look like.
Jaws was also a trend-setter on the commercial front. “It was the highest-grossing film of all time until the release of Star Wars two years later; both films were pivotal in establishing the modern Hollywood business model, which pursues high box-office returns from action and adventure films with simple high-concept premises, released during the summer in thousands of theaters and advertised heavily,” says the film’s Wikipedia page.
