Filmmaking legend Steven Spielberg loves 3 Idiots. Hard to believe? Then listen to this: not just that he loves the Rajkumar Hirani directorial, but he even recognised Bollywood icon Kareena Kapoor Khan in public as the female lead from the film, highlighting just how much he appreciated it. Kareena herself recently opened up about the incident wherein the Hollywood legend approached her while she was dining at a restaurant.
“I was in a restaurant when I was travelling somewhere. Steven Spielberg was also there at the same restaurant. This was many moons ago when 3 Idiots had just been released. He actually came up to me and asked, ‘Are you the girl who’s in that very famous Indian film about the three students?’ I said, ‘Yes, that’s me.’ He said, ‘My God, I love that movie.’ I didn’t have to act in an English film for him to see it. He had watched 3 Idiots. So that’s a moment for us,” she said while taking part in a session moderated by filmmaker Karan Johar at the WAVES 2025 Summit.
It may be mentioned here that back in 2013, during his visit to Mumbai, Steven Spielberg had spoken about his love for 3 Idiots. During a chat with Hindustan Times then, he also admitted to watching the movie three times. When asked if he could list five films he connects with, Spielberg included 3 Idiots too in the last, noting, “I’ve seen it three times, loved the emotional undertones.” His other picks were ET the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Saving Private Ryan (1998), Jaws (1975) and The Godfather (1972).
Starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Boman Irani in key roles, 3 Idiots was the highest-grossing Indian film until 2013. Rajkumar Hirani’s third directorial venture, the coming-of-age comedy-drama was loosely adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone.
