Following her debut in ace Malayalam filmmaker Sathyan Anthikkad’s Manassinakkare (2003), actor Nayanthara’s rise to fame was meteoric. After a few more notable characters in Malayalam, she landed one of the female lead roles in Chandramukhi, opposite “Superstar” Rajinikanth. The film went on to become a phenomenal success, and a flood of opportunities started coming her way, with most of them eventually emerging as massive hits. And before she knew it, Nayanthara had become a South Indian sensation and an A-lister, capable of contributing to the footfall of her movies.
With her career witnessing only growth since then, Nayanthara currently ranks as one of the biggest female stars in the country, having also been a part of director Atlee Kumar’s Shah Rukh Khan-led Jawan, which emerged as the second highest-grossing Hindi film of all time. Despite such a successful career spanning over two decades, Nayanthara doesn’t have many people whom she would call friends within the industry, and she mostly likes to lead a low-profile life. In fact, she did not even have public accounts on social media for the longest time.
Once, Nayanthara opened up about her reclusive nature and revealed that she didn’t have close friends in the industry. In an old interview with Kairali TV, she said, “I maintain only professional relationships with my colleagues in the industry. I reserve personal connections for people I know well. I give a lot of value to friendship. In life, I may have only two or three people who know me very well and whom I can genuinely call friends. They know everything about me. They’re the kind of people who would show up immediately if I ever needed anything. It’s hard to build and maintain close friendships in the industry, mainly because we don’t work with the same people on every film. Once a shoot wraps and we say our goodbyes, we might only see each other occasionally at events or parties.”
During the chat, she also spoke about competition among actors. “It’s there in all industries, including Malayalam and Bollywood, among both heroes and heroines. However, it’s not healthy. It’s better if we keep competing with ourselves (trying to improve with each performance) and not others. It’s not a race where we can compete with others. The characters and scripts one person gets might not be the same as what another one does. Instead, if we keep on competing with ourselves, we can mark at least 1 per cent improvement in our performances with every film,” Nayanthara, who was last seen in the Netflix sports thriller Test, pointed out.
