When Johnny Depp’s fee dwarfed that of Tom Cruise and other superstars

Hollywood star Johnny Depp was paid $68 million for his appearance in Alice in Wonderland, the 2010 movie. If you think the remuneration was not a big deal, you would be shocked to learn that he was paid the sum for a mere 7-minute role! On a per-minute basis, he received ten times what Tom Cruise received as fee for his most recent Mission Impossible movie.

Yet, Johnny Depp’s performance in the movie was not universally acclaimed. Several critics specifically pointed out that Depp’s Scottish Glaswegian accent for his role was inconsistent. One particularly harsh review described him as “just a smiling Johnny one-note with a secret hip-hop dance move” that made them “wondering when he was going to stop making nonsense.”

While some critics were unkind, the portrayal earned him a Golden Globe nomination.

Johnny Depp achieved global superstardom for his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, a role that garnered him an Academy Award nomination and became a cultural phenomenon. He was paid the astronomical fee for Alice in Wonderland because of that success.
