Wrestling Federation of India president Sanjay Singh was elected as a member of the United World Wrestling-Asia bureau on Monday in the UWW general assembly in Amman. The election took place a day before the Asian Championships set to take place in the city.
According to a release by the Wrestling Federation of India, Singh won 28 out of 38 votes. The statement read, “His election to this prestigious position marks a significant achievement for Indian wrestling, further strengthening the country’s presence on the international wrestling stage.”
Singh is a close aide of erstwhile WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh Sharan, who had sexual harassment charges levelled against him. The Indian Olympic Committee had placed the administration of wrestling in India under an ad-hoc committee, which led to a ban from the UWW. Singh later contested and won the WFI elections but within three days the Sports Ministry banned the WFI again. That ban was lifted recently, allowing India to send a wrestling team for the Asian Championships.
Singh also released his statement in the release and said, “This is not just a personal milestone but a testament to the growth and recognition of Indian wrestling at the global level. I look forward to working closely with UWW-Asia to promote and develop the sport across the continent,” said Singh in a release.
