West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Saturday visited trouble-torn Murshidabad district and interacted with the affected people, including family members of the father and son duo who were killed, during the recent violence over anti-Waqf Act protests.
A delegation of the National Commission for Women (NCW) also visited Murshidabad and said it will submit its report to the Centre.
Protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act spiralled into major violence during April 11-12 in Muslim-dominated Murshidabad district, where three people were killed and several others injured.
Chandan Das and his father Hargobind Das were hacked to death by a mob at Jafrabad locality in Shamsherganj. Shamsherganj, Dhulian, and Suti witnessed widespread violence in the district during the protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act.
“I will look into their requests. There are three to four suggestions. They have asked for permanent BSF postings in the locality. I will take up the matter with the appropriate authorities. Some proactive action will definitely be taken. I have also shared with them the ‘Peace Room’ number (Raj Bhavan helpline),” Bose told reporters after visiting the residence of the deceased father and son duo and interacting with the family members.
The Governor also spoke to locals in Dhulian Bazar area. “I have asked them (the victims) to feel free to talk to me. They want justice, and they will get justice,” he said.
Sought refuge
On Friday, Bose visited Malda and interacted with the people who sought refuge there after the episode of violence in Murshidabad district.
Teams from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and NCW also visited Malda relief camps to meet the victims. The ruling Trinamool Congress criticised the visits by the Governor and NHRC and NCW teams, and alleged that they were aimed at stoking tension in the already-volatile region.
During the Governor’s visit in Malda, inmates of the Parlalpur High School relief camp at Baishnabnagar staged protests alleging “police-imposed censorship, denial of access to visitors and inhumane living conditions”.
Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday took out a mega protest rally of BJP in Kolkata against the violence in Murshidabad.
“More than 10,000 Hindus have fled Murshidabad district after the violence. This violence was pre-planned. As long as Mamata Banerjee and her police manage the affairs in West Bengal, Hindus will have to flee their homes,” Adhikari said.
Trinamool Congress leaders have accused the BJP of politicising the issue to its benefit.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday termed the violence in Murshidabad as “pre-planned” and alleged that the Border Security Force (BSF) and other central agencies are facilitating cross-border influx from Bangladesh to create unrest in the State.
Addressing a gathering of Muslim religious leaders, Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress supremo, said if “outside” elements from Bangladesh were involved in the violence in Murshidabad, then the Central government should be held responsible.
