The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has extended the deadline for the online submission of Class XI semester examination marks. The move comes after the Advanced Society for Headmasters and Headmistresses (ASFHM) submitted a formal request, highlighting the multiple challenges currently being faced by schools across the state. A letter had been sent to Dr Chiranjib Bhattacharjee, the President of the Council.
“The Council has taken into account the recent shortage of teachers in many schools, a situation worsened by the latest Supreme Court ruling. Additionally, recent disturbances in parts of the state, including Murshidabad, have led to the deployment of security forces on school campuses and disruptions in internet services. These factors, combined with holidays due to Eid, Poila Boishakh (Bengali New Year), and other regional festivals, hindered timely mark submissions. Taking these circumstances into consideration, the Council has issued a circular extending the deadline for online marks submission to April 30, 2025,” said Chandan Kumar Maity of the ASFHM.
The situation has been grim in government-sponsored schools: while some were left with no teachers for Class 12 science students, there were instances where Bengali language teachers had to take geography lessons.
Meanwhile, in a partial relief to the West Bengal government, the Supreme Court on Thursday said the “untainted” assistant teachers for classes 9-12, whose appointments were cancelled earlier this month due to irregularities in recruitment, could continue their jobs till the fresh selection process is completed. The court ordered the West Bengal government to publish an advertisement for fresh recruitments by May 31, failing which the court said it would take action.
