Karnataka – A clash over cattle transportation in Karnataka’s Belgaum district took a violent turn after five members of the Hindutva-affiliated group Sri Ram Sene were beaten up by local Muslim villagers in Ingali village of Hukkeri taluk. The group had allegedly accused a truck driver of transporting cattle for slaughter — a claim that spiraled into a larger altercation involving allegations of harassment and extortion.
The incident began when Sri Ram Sene activists intercepted a truck carrying cattle and escorted the driver to the local police station, accusing him of engaging in illegal cow slaughter activities. The driver, however, refuted the claims, stating the cattle were meant for dairy farming. He also alleged that the activists attempted to extort money under the pretense of protecting cows.
In response, the police temporarily seized the cattle and sent them to a gaushala (cow shelter) in Belavi.
Alleged Misconduct Sparks Retaliation
The next day, a local man named Bapusa Multhani went to the gaushala claiming he had legally purchased the animals for his dairy farm. Based on documentation, the shelter authorities released the cattle to him.
Upon learning this, the Sri Ram Sene workers allegedly followed Multhani to his home in Ingali village. There, they reportedly entered his house and created a commotion. Eyewitnesses from the village allege that the activists also misbehaved with a local woman, which enraged the community.
In retaliation, angry villagers tied the five Sri Ram Sene members to a tree and beat them with wooden sticks, leaving them seriously injured and pleading for mercy.
Video Goes Viral; Police Step In
Videos of the attack surfaced on social media, showing the tied-up activists being beaten. While no formal complaint was lodged by the Sri Ram Sene group, Belgaum district police filed a suo motu case and have initiated an investigation into both the assault and the initial incident of alleged extortion.
The situation remains tense in the region, with security heightened to prevent any further communal flare-up.
