Actor Vicky Kaushal has reacted to Aamir Khan’s words of praise after the superstar recently said that he could see Vicky playing the iconic role of Bhuvan in Lagaan. The 2001 film, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, featured Aamir himself in the lead and remains one of the most celebrated films in Indian cinema.
On Komal Nahta’s podcast Game Changers: The Producer Series, Aamir was asked who he thought could step into Bhuvan’s shoes if Lagaan were made today. Responding to the question, Aamir said, “Vicky Kaushal, I think he has that quality of Bhuvan– dignity, strength, inner strength, steadiness, and integrity. He reflects all of that very naturally. He is a great actor.”
Vicky, clearly moved by the compliment, took to Instagram Stories to share a clip of Aamir’s interview. Along with it, he wrote, “There can be no other ‘Bhuvan’ than Aamir Sir… but such an honour to get such kind words from the master himself.”

Released in 2001, Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India told the story of a group of villagers during the British colonial period who challenged their rulers to a cricket match in a desperate bid to avoid paying heavy taxes. Apart from Aamir, the film starred Gracy Singh, Suhasini Mulay, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Raghubir Yadav, Rajesh Vivek, Raj Zutshi and Akhilendra Mishra. The movie was not only a massive success in India but also earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, cementing its place as a classic.
Today, both Aamir and Vicky continue to shine in their respective journeys. Aamir was last seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, directed by RS Prasanna, alongside Genelia D’Souza, and also appeared in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie with Rajinikanth. Vicky, on the other hand, has established himself as one of the most versatile actors of his generation with films such as Masaan, Raazi, Uri: The Surgical Strike, Sardar Udham and Sam Bahadur. His last release, Chhaava, crossed 500 crore Rs at the global box office, and he will next be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love and War with Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor.
Aamir’s heartfelt words and Vicky’s gracious response have left fans touched, sparking conversations about what a modern-day Lagaan might look like. But for now, the original remains untouchable, with Bhuvan forever belonging to Aamir Khan.
