iPhone users have long been able to send emergency messages over satellite. However, Android users have been unlucky, as a only few new devices like the Pixel 9 series previously supported this feature. However, when Samsung launched the Galaxy S25 series, Verizon was quick to confirm that all three models of the series support Satellite SOS messaging. Now, Verizon has announced that its satellite texting service is now available on select Google Pixel and Galaxy smartphones.
Verizon rolls out satellite texting to the Google Pixel 9 & Samsung Galaxy S25 series
Today, via a press release, Verizon announced that it is rolling out its satellite texting service to a few Android smartphones. This makes Verizon customers the first in the US to have the ability to send text messages over satellite to anyone with any device.
If you are on the Verizon network and have a phone from the Google Pixel 9 or Samsung Galaxy S25 series, you can send satellite texts from network dead zones. The announcement came nearly a month after Verizon successfully tested data services and video calling over satellite connectivity.
The company also notes that it uses satellite technology to provide “reliable service in emergency situations through satellite-linked portable assets.” For the uninitiated, Verizon also uses satellite connectivity for new cell sites and provides satellite IoT capabilities for various industries.
Other telecom companies are also pushing for satellite technology
It’s worth noting that Verizon showcased satellite texting and calling through an ad during the Grammy Awards last month. However, it isn’t the only U.S. telecom company racing for satellite connectivity. T-Mobile is another name that has been actively testing its system with the Starlink network. The company even aired an ad during Super Bowl LIX highlighting the satellite technology. Moreover, AT&T and AST SpaceMobile have also successfully completed testing video calls over satellite to an everyday smartphone.
