Colonialism and the dominance of big powers had suppressed pluralism in the past and it was necessary that this should change to democratise the world order, and there has to be more focus on traditions, heritage and ideas, said External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit.
“The truth is that the world is essentially, intrinsically and essentially diverse, and that pluralism has been suppressed in the past by both colonialism and big power dominance,” Jaishankar said in a speech at the event, attended by representatives from over 60 countries.
“As we seek now to democratise the international system, it is not enough to just assert political and economic independence. It is equally essential that we give voice to our traditions, to our heritage, to ideas, to practices, and to our creativity,” he said.
Diverse voices with their many experiences and many truths had the right to express themselves, he added.
Striking a cautionary note, the minister said that with the rise of artificial intelligence, there was the danger of increasing preoccupation with irresponsible use of emerging technologies. In the ongoing discourse there was a need to reduce bias, democratise content and prioritise its ethics, he said.
He also made a pitch for smoother mobility on talent that would contribute more to creativity.
