The Deepika Padukone vs. Sandeep Reddy Vanga issue has blown up like anything, spawning online debates and discussions. The issue has now taken the form of a Bollywood vs. Tollywood fiasco.
Bollywood has often been accused of being all about PR stunts. As a journo put it, “At this point, it’s a full-time PR industry and part-time filmmaking industry.” The series of box-office duds coming out of Bollywood has only worsened this perception. When your films continue to tank but you continue to invest in PR, then, of course, you will be laughed at.
Granted that Bollywood is obsessed with PR but Telugu cinema is less so not because it believes in content. Tollywood is starved for good PR ideas. But there is another angle to this. Tollywood celebs don’t outsource a lot of PR work. They do it themselves, in full public glare.
Telugu film celebs are the most talkative during promotional events. Many stars go on and on when they are given the mic. They hold too many events and, every time, they speak like it is the last time they will get to speak. The heroes, directors, technicians and sometimes even comedians bombard the audience with lies and damn lies about their alleged masterpiece-level movies. If they do everything, there is little left for the PRs to do. That’s why Tollywood appears to be less interested in PR. Tollywood, in reality, is the most publicity-obsessed industry in the world.
