An environmental impact assessment study is being carried out in Kanniyakumari district to assess any impact caused due to pollution caused by ship MSC Elsa 3 that submerged near Kochi on May 24.
Due to the strong southwest monsoon, plastic particles from the containers are drifting towards the south and to Kanniyakumari district. There could also be the possibility of oil spill along the coast.
The study is being carried out by scientists from the National Institute of Ocean Technology, National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management, National Institute of Ocean Research and Anna University, Environment Secretary Supriya Sahu said during a review under the chairmanship of Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday, stated a release.
Experts from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) are carrying out inspections and steps are being taken to deal with the safety of containers in case any hazardous substances leaked from the containers, the release added.
The Chief Minister reviewed the precautionary and safety measures to remove plastic particles and other materials like oil spill from the coast of Tamil Nadu.
He urged officials to ensure safe disposal of plastic particles and other materials in the southern coastal areas of Tamil Nadu without causing any harm to the public and to fisheries.
