TMC MP Mahua Moitra’s remark about Amit Shah sparks row, BJP files complaint

TMC MP Mahua Moitras remark about Amit Shah sparks row

A political row has erupted over remarks made by Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra about Union Home Minister Amit Shah, leading to the Bharatiya Janata Party filing a police complaint against her, The Hindu reported.

While the BJP objected to Moitra saying that Shah’s head should be cut off for allowing undocumented immigration into India, the Trinamool Congress said that the remark was not meant to be taken literally.

Speaking to reporters in West Bengal’s Nadia district on Thursday, the Krishnanagar MP alleged that Shah had failed to “check infiltrators” at the borders, and that the Border Security Force reports to the Union home ministry, The Hindu reported.

Noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly claimed that undocumented immigrants from other countries were entering India and taking away land, Moitra asked whose responsibility it was to protect the borders and stop them from entering.

Moitra on Thursday said that the prime minister, during his arrest from the Red Fort on Independence Day, had said that “infiltrators” were causing demographic changes. “But even as he was saying this, his home minister [Shah] was standing in the front row, smiling and clapping,” The Hindu quoted her as saying.

“If we don’t have anyone to protect our borders, if people from another country are entering every day, if our citizens complain that infiltrators are eyeing our mothers and sisters and snatching our lands, then the first thing you should do is cut Amit Shah’s head and put it on your table,” the newspaper quoted her as adding.

The BJP has filed a complaint at the Kotwali Police Station in Krishnanagar against Moitra for her remarks, PTI reported. Sandeep Majumdar, the BJP spokesperson who filed the complaint, described the remarks as “anti-nationalist” and “anti-state”.

BJP leader Rahul Sinha said that the “distasteful and objectionable” remarks made by the Trinamool Congress MP reflected her mindset and that of the party.

Sinha added that the BJP would like to know if this was the official line of the Trinamool Congress. “If not, they must tender an apology and initiate action against Moitra,” The Hindu quoted him as saying.

Moitra, in a social media post on Friday, said that this was the “modus operandi of BJP troll cell – pick one issue, give it to all resident twits (& an ‘a’ instead of an ‘i’ would be just as well) & make it ‘viral’ on social media”.’

She added: “Today’s theme is Mahua Moitra’s Off With His Head metaphor. Long live my infamy, guys. Love it.”

Kunal Ghosh, her party colleague, said that through her remarks, Moitra meant to say that Shah’s name will go out of people’s hearts, The Hindu reported.

“She did not mean that she would physically cut the head of Amit Shah, it was only an expression and at most a grammatical complex, there is no need to take it literally,” Ghosh said.

The remarks came in the backdrop of several Bengali-speaking migrant workers – mostly Muslims – being detained in parts of the country on suspicion of being Bangladeshis. The Trinamool Congress has accused the BJP of unleashing “linguistic terror” on Bengali-speaking persons.
