TikTok’s DIY Malware Trend Is Peak Internet Stupidity

TikTok is known for viral dances and quirky challenges, but now it might be known for spreading malware. According to recent reports, some TikTok videos are being used to distribute information-stealing malware, through tactic called “ClickFix”.

The ClickFix scheme typically involves AI-generated TikTok videos that will instruct viewers to execute specific PowerShell commands while making the viewer think that they are unlocking premium features in popular software like Spotify or CapCut. Instead, these commands initiate the download of malware such as Vidar and StealC. These are designed to harvest sensitive data, including login credentials, credit card details, and even crypto wallet data.

One video that claims to “boost your Spotify experience instantly” has amassed 500,000 views and over 20,000 likes. Showing just how effective this type of video can be. And with how widespread TikTok’s algorithm can be, it amplifies the potential impact of these campaigns.

The ClickFix tactic isn’t just on TikTok or on Windows systems either. So you’ll still want to be aware of this tactic and do what you can to avoid it.

How to stay safe

So, how can you stay safe while also still enjoying TikTok? First of all, avoid executing commands or downloading software based on instructions from unverified sources, especially social media platforms. You should only download software from their official site, like Spotify from Spotify.com.

You’ll also want to regularly update your phone, laptop, or any other device. Making sure that you’re on the latest version of the OS with the latest security patches is also a big deal. While these updates can be annoying, they are going to protect you from things like this.

Finally, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Avoid clicking links from a TikTok video, especially if you can’t see the URL. Cybercriminals are going to continue to use popular platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and others to attack unsuspecting users.
