Summary: President Donald Trump has, yet again, move to delay the TikTok ban that’s been looming for months. The app will have another 75 days in the States before the next ban or extension.
TikTok is living on borrowed time, and it has been for months. It’s been in danger of exile since the final days of the Biden administration, but Trump came in and extended its stay. Since then, several companies have put in their bid to buy the video-sharing platform’s American business. We’ve had companies like Amazon, Oracle, Perplexity trying to buy it. Even YouTube icon MrBeast has put together a group of investors to buy it.
However, it seems that ByteDance, TikTok’s owner, is resistant to sell. This drama has been going on for over a year, but the company does not want to give up the goods.
Selling TikTok’s American business will mean that all data collected on American citizens will be stored on U.S. soil. Not only that, but the company that owns TikTok’s American business will have a say over how its data is used. For example, Perplexity wants to fundamentally change how its search algorithm functions.
The TikTok ban has been delayed yet again
If you didn’t know what an executive order is, then you will now, because ever since he returned to office, Trump has been firing them off almost as much as his frivolous tariffs. We’ve seen a bunch of executive orders, and this next one makes the pile that much bigger.
According to a new report, Trump signed an executive order to prolong TikTok’s stay in the U.S. by yet another 75 days while the Trump Administration tries to iron this out. Even though Trump said he’d consider lowering the massive 34% tariff on China’s goods if ByteDance sells TikTok’s U.S. stake, the company declined. This left Trump with only a few options. The last extension would have expired this weekend, so he signed the order to extend the deadline.
This pushes it to mid-June. The administration hopes that it would come to some sort of agreement before then.
