Three killed in wall collapse amid heavy rainfall

Three women were killed in two separate instances of wall collapse in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday as the state recorded heavy rainfall, reported The Hindu.

Ashothai, 69, and her daughter Jaya, 40, were killed after a wall of their home in Andarmullipallam near Puduchatram in Cuddalore district collapsed at around 10 am. They were both farm labourers.

In Kongarapalayam near Kallakurichi, 60-year-old Vanamayili died after a wall of her home caved in.

This came amid torrential rainfall brought by the low-pressure area that had formed over the southwestern Bay of Bengal on Tuesday.

The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert indicating extremely heavy rainfall in Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu, and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

An orange alert for heavy rainfall was issued for Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts. A yellow alert was issued for the remaining districts.

A red alert requires the authorities to “take action” in view of an extreme weather event, while an orange alert expects the administration to “be prepared”. A yellow alert means that authorities should “be updated” on the situation.

The weather agency also said that the well-marked lowpressure area in the Bay of Bengal was likely to turn into a depression over the southwestern and the adjoining west-central areas of the bay off the coasts of northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, The Hindu reported.

The weather system will move towards the coasts and intensify into a deep depression by Thursday afternoon, it added.

B Amudha, an official at the Regional Meteorological Centre, said there will be more clarity on whether the system will intensify into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday after it becomes a depression.

“Three weather systems, including an upper air circulation over the south Andaman Sea and neighbourhood, will influence vigorous Northeast monsoon activity,” The Hindu quoted Amudha as saying.

Schools and educational institutions in Chennai, Kallakurichi, Namakkal, Perambalur, Salem, Pudukkottai, Villupuram and Cuddalore districts were closed on Wednesday in light of the heavy rainfall, the newspaper reported. All educational institutions in Puducherry were also closed.

Red alert in Andhra Pradesh

The weather agency issued a red alert for six districts of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, noting that the low-pressure area is likely to bring heavy rainfall, reported PTI.

The districts are Prakasam, Nellore, Kadapa, Annamayya, Tirupati and Chittoor.

It also predicted that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in Sri Sathyasai, Anantapur, Nandyal, Kurnool and Bapatla districts.

State Revenue Minister A Satya Prasad has instructed officials to shift those living in low-lying areas to safer places, according to PTI.

Kerala continues to record heavy rain

Heavy rainfall continued to batter Kerala on Wednesday with Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram, and Palakkad districts declaring a holiday for educational institutions, Onmanorama reported.

The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Idukki, Palakkad and Malappuram districts and an orange alert for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kozhikode and Wayanad. The remaining districts have been issued a yellow alert.

The weather agency said that a low-pressure area over southeastern Arabian Sea persisted on Tuesday and is likely to move slowly westwards, intensifying into a depression within the next 24 hours, according to Onmanorama.

This low-pressure area, along with the current weather system over southwestern Bay of Bengal, is likely to lead to rainfall in the state till Friday.

On Sunday, at least one person was killed in Idukki district amid flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall.

On October 16, the weather agency said that the southwest monsoon had withdrawn from the entire country. It added the northeast monsoon had set in over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, south interior Karnataka and Kerala-Mahé.
