On March 27, the Internet became a Ghibli-inspired paradise as users made the most of OpenAI’s new image generator to create everything from memes to portraits. The platform released its “most advanced image generator yet” via an update to the GPT-4o model. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has now asked users to take it slow on the Ghibli trend as it has impacted the company’s resources.
“Can yall please chill on generating images this is insane our team needs sleep,” Altman wrote on X. Paul Graham, British computer-scientist and writer, responded to the post, asking, “Lots of people need to be awake when load is high?” to which, Atlman explained, “we just haven’t been able to catch up since launch so people are still working to keep the service up biblical demand, i have never seen anything like it.”

Studio Ghibli, the famous Japanese animation studio established in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki, is celebrated for its iconic anime. Mastered by animator and filmmaker Miyazaki, this style has brought to life whimsical landscapes and reimagined pop culture figures, giving its fans iconic animes like Spirited Away, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Grave of the Fireflies, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle, and more.
As the Ghibli trend took over the Internet, an old video from 2016 resurfaced, featuring Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki strongly expressing his disapproval during an AI demonstration by his team. “I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself, he said.
In 2024, Miyazaki was honoured with the esteemed Ramon Magsaysay Award, commonly referred to as Asia’s Nobel Prize.
