The PS5 now lets you relive every PlayStation era permanently

The classic console themes for PS5 were one of the most beloved additions Sony brought to the table for PlayStation’s 30th Anniversary. There was just one problem: they were only available for a limited time. PlayStation fans were sad to see these themes go, likely because of several reasons, but mostly due to the amount of nostalgia they introduced. If you somehow missed the themes while they were available during the 30th Anniversary celebration, the themes were based around the PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4.

Now, Sony is bringing those classic console themes for the PS5 back as part of the console’s latest system software update. That’s good news for anyone who had been using them since they were first made available and loved the style.

PS5 classic console themes include boot-up sounds unique to each console

The visual style of each theme is a treat for PlayStation fans, especially those who owned or still own the consoles they’re inspired by. That being said, perhaps the best part about each theme is the sounds that come along with it. There’s a special boot-up sound that accompanies each console theme that matches the boot-up sound of that console. There are also matching system sounds for switching between menus and games on your dashboard and the like. Making it feel more like you’re using one of those older consoles.

If you don’t see the themes available on your own PS5, you likely need to install the system software update. It’s also possible that the update isn’t available for you yet. However, Sony is usually pretty quick about pushing these updates out after the announcement. It also usually does so in a manner that hits all users at or around the same time. So, you should have an update available.

The update also includes a feature for more immersive audio

The PS5 is all about gaming immersion. Sony built the marketing around it as a console that basically teases the senses. With Tempest 3D Audio Tech and the adaptive triggers and advanced haptics of the DualSense, Sony was taking immersion in games beyond visuals with higher fidelity. The Tempest 3D Audio, in particular, has a tendency to really drop you into the game world. But it does have limits.

Sometimes audio for softer sounds gets muddied or washed out. Getting overshadowed by the larger, louder, and more booming sounds from the rest of the game events happening around you. With this new update, Sony has added a new feature called Audio Focus, and it amplifies these softer sounds to help them stand out more. You can find this option in the settings, and there are a few different focus types available. These include Boost Low Pitch, Boost Voices, Boost High Pitch, and Quiet Sounds.

Which one you want to use may change from game to game. So you can play with these as you go to see which one fits the current situation.
