Google’s Pixel 9a was just announced this week and while it will be capable of a lot of stuff, running things like Pixel Screenshots is apparently not one of those things. The Pixel 9a isn’t in the hands of users yet because Google has officially delayed its launch. However, Google is confirming details about the phone prior to people getting it in their hands.
One of those details is the fact that the Pixel 9a will not have at least two features you can find on the Pixel 9 and its variants. Pixel Screenshots is one of these features. Speaking to Ars Technica, Google says the phone won’t be capable of running it because it runs on Gemini Nano XXS. Whereas the version the Pixel 9 series has is Gemini Nano XS.
The Pixel 9a doesn’t have enough RAM for Pixel Screenshots
The main reason Pixel Screenshots won’t be available on the Pixel 9a is because of the Gemini Nano version it runs. The reason it can’t run the same version of Gemini Nano that the Pixel 9 phones use comes down RAM. Or lack thereof. The Pixel 9 phones come with 12GB or 16GB of RAM depending on the model you choose. The Pixel 9a, meanwhile, only has 8GB of RAM, and this isn’t enough to run Gemini Nano XS. So, unfortunately, that reportedly locks out the Pixel Screenshots feature.
The same report mentions that the Call Notes feature inside the phone app won’t work for the same reason. As 9To5Google points out, the Pixel 9a’s 8GB of RAM means Gemini Nano XXS doesn’t run in the background and doesn’t have multimodal capabilities. That prevents the phone’s Gemini version from processing images.
The phone doesn’t lose out on every AI feature
While it won’t have two of the arguably most exciting new AI features, the Pixel 9a still has some stuff to write home about. Both Pixel Studio and Summarize in Recorder are available on the phone. Plus, there’s a handful of AI capabilities that were introduced with the Pixel 8 series. Such as all the Magic Editor features in the camera.
That being said, if Pixel Screenshots is a feature you’ve been wanting, it might be best to spend the extra money and go with one of the Pixel 9 models. This is especially true if you were looking at the 256GB Pixel 9a. That variant will retail for $599. Google’s 256GB Pixel 9 is normally $899, but Amazon currently has it for $749. The 128GB model is even cheaper at $639. Then you’re only spending $39 more for extra features.
