4K is the current standard for the majority of televisions out there. It is also becoming more common for monitors. This is why most smartphones capture video footage at 4K resolution. But Apple is looking to futureproof its iPhones, especially the iPhone 17 Pro series, by giving it 8K video recording capabilities.
8K video coming to the iPhone 17 Pro
This is according to a report on Weibo by Fixed Focus Digital, who claims that the iPhone 17 Pro models will support 8K video recording. Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first time we’re hearing about 8K video recording on an iPhone. Last year, a report from 9to5Mac revealed that Apple tested 8K videos for the iPhone 16 Pro series. However, it didn’t make the cut. This could have been due to hardware limitations on the phones.
That being said, 8K videos aren’t that common. There are some Android phones, like the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, that support 8K. But like we said, it’s not exactly a common feature. However, we can’t really blame manufacturers for not bothering with 8K videos. Not many TVs or monitors support 8K yet, so all that resolution could end up going to waste.
This doesn’t mean there’s no point to it. Having a higher resolution means having more pixels. This is useful if you’re looking to crop videos but don’t want to lose the details. But then again, the average user probably doesn’t bother doing that anyway. Messaging apps like WhatsApp also compress videos before sending them. Plus, if you’re only using your phone to browse social media, we doubt most people can tell the difference between 4K and 8K.
This is why, like we said, Apple probably just wants to futureproof its iPhones. It also makes for pretty good marketing, where the Cupertino company can boast about the feature.
Launching later this year
Apple is launching the iPhone 17 series later this year. The rumors claim that the lineup this year will consist of the base iPhone 17. It will be accompanied by the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, although we heard rumors the latter could be known as the iPhone 17 Ultra. Apple is also rumored to introduce a brand new model in the form of the iPhone 17 Air. This will replace the Plus model.
The iPhone 17 Air will be the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever launched. It also serves as a testbed for future iPhones, like the foldable iPhone rumored to launch in 2026.
