iFi launches the iDSD Valkyrie, a DAC for those who love remastered audio
Most of the time, you don’t have much wiggle room when it comes to audio quality. If something is recorded in a certain quality, then that’s just how it is. However, there is one solution in the form of remastering it. Doing this usually requires a professional mastering house, but that’s no longer the case. The iDSD Valkyrie has its own DSD Remastering algorithm that’s made possible by a custom-coded FPGA (Field-programmable gate array). With custom software and hardware, iFi can ensure that everything will be perfectly optimized.
With this marriage of software and hardware, the iFi iDSD Valkyrie can remaster audio to DSD512 or DSD1024 formats. When remastered, the files will be upscaled to a higher resolution with reduced distortion and more detail. If an audio file was recorded in low quality, remastering it won’t magically add detail to the sound. Rather, remastering the audio will help bring out the details in the audio file more clearly.
If you don’t want to remaster the audio file, don’t worry! You can opt for the ‘normal’ mode that will push the signal directly to the DAC and PCM. So, if you want to have more control over the original file, that’s an option.
K2HD Technology
As incredible as iFi’s technology is, the company reached out to collaborate on the core technology running the experience. It partnered with JVCKENWOOD to bring its remastering technology to life. The iFi iDSD Valkyrie has two modes, which are K2 and K2HD. The K2 technology will preserve the file’s original resolution, while K2HD will boost it.
Digital filters
Most high-quality DACs give you a selection of digital filters, and this one is no different. You have your choice between Apodizing, GTO, Bit Perfect, Standard, Minimum, and Transient Aligned. These all give the sound a different characteristic, and they allow you to better customize the sound to your wants.
The fun doesn’t stop there, as there are three iFi-exclusive features that further add to the experience. Firstly, there’s XSpace. This is for people who want a wider soundstage. It opens up the sound for people wearing closed-back headphones.
Next, there’s XBassII. This feature works twofold. Firstly, it will restore the bass frequencies that you lose when using open-back headphones. Also, it pushes up the bass that you hear with closed-back headphones.
Lastly, XPresence will enhance the mids and vocals, bringing them forward in the mix. This gives them more presence and clarity. These three features add so much character and life to the sound that you wouldn’t get anywhere else.
Analog switches
Unlike most other DACs, the iFi iDSD Valkyrie has analog switches for the EQ modes. While it might not sound significant, this helps reduce the distortion and phase shift. This helps preserve the original audio quality.
Let’s talk Lossless Bluetooth
This is a pretty touchy subject. This DAC uses Qualcomm’s aptX Lossless Bluetooth codec along with Sony’s LDAC codec. These are two high-quality audio codecs, and they’re used in many high-end devices. aptX Lossless can deliver CD-quality music over the air, which is a pretty impressive feat. However, just know that, even though it’s called aptX Lossless, it doesn’t mean that you’re getting a truly lossless signal. So, don’t expect to hear studio-quality audio.
