Do you remember Google’s Project Starline? It’s the ambitious project that allows you to have a conversation with a 3D holographic representation of another person. Well, don’t think that Google has forgotten about it. It’s now called Google Beam, and you can experience it through the HP Dimension, but at a price.
With all the attention Google has put around Gemini, it’s easy to think that Google has forgotten about the project. However, the company leveraged its recent innovations in AI to help make Google Beam a reality.
Using a special setup, a person can sit alone in their room and have a conversation with another person in another location. Even though the two people are distant, it will look and feel as though they are sitting in the same room. It does this by using a set of six cameras. Each person will see a 3D reconstruction of the person on the other end. The HP Dimension is set up in a way to make it look like the person you’re talking to is actually in the room with you.
So, you’ll be receiving a 3d reconstructed image over the year, which seems like it will be rather choppy. However, you will see the other person at a smooth 60 frames per second. The icing on the cake is the simulated eye contact. Using AI technology, Google will be able to make it look like the person is looking directly at you. This eliminates the webcam effect, where a person using a webcam is seemingly staring off into the distance when staring at their screen rather than staring at the webcam. This technology could be amazing for video conferences and meetings.
The HP Dimension can introduce you to Google Beam, but at a price
Google partnered with HP to bring the Google Beam technology to the masses. Well, not many people will be able to use it, as doing so will cost a pretty penny. We’re not going to mince words, the HP Dimension costs a wallet-shattering $25,000. That’s almost the price of buying 14 Pixel 9 Pro Folds.
However, the money doesn’t stop flowing from there. There’s also a special microphone that can connect to the Dimension. Called the Poly Studio A2 Table Microphone, it will capture clear audio from quite a distance. This way, the experience will be that much more immersive.
You’re actually able to connect up to eight microphones using a special bridge. Guess what, the bridge is an extra expense. Each microphone costs $329, and the bridge costs $549. So, if you buy an HP Dimension, a bridge, and eight microphones, it will wind up costing you at least $28,181.
If you’re interested, don’t take out that second mortgage on your house just yet, because you will still need to pay for the Google Beam service. We have no idea how much that will cost, but we can be certain that it will be pretty expensive.
But let’s stop talking about price
Sure, using Google Beam to its fullest extent costs nearly $30,000. However, the average Joe looking to FaceTime their granny won’t really use it. It represents a huge step forward in AI and communication technology. Google Beam is one of those technologies that brings science fiction into science fact. It can make video calls and conferences much more immersive. Who knows what sort of impact this technology can have on the world?
