The best new Android apps and games for May 2025

Andy Walker / Android Authority

It isn’t easy to keep up with the best new Android apps. Some might not be “new,” but they may still be new to you. Others often pass by without much fanfare. However, I’m here to help. Each month, I scoured the internet to find the best new Android apps and new Android games available, focusing on titles that offer something different to the status quo. Be sure to visit our lists of the best Android apps and best Android games of all time for the master lists.

Giga Text

Easily turn your phone into a digital signpost.

  • Price: Free, with optional in-app purchases
  • Developer: Chimbori

I didn’t know I needed this app until I encountered it this month. It comes from the same developer behind Hermit, the brilliant lite app creator I use religiously on my devices. Giga Text is far simpler in concept and execution.

As its name suggests, Giga Text allows users to display small lines of text using the biggest font option on their device. This is useful for communicating with others from across a room, getting bartenders’ attention, and avoiding awkward shouting matches in noisy restaurants. It’s certainly an app you won’t use every day, but it’s one of those “better have than have not” tools.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

An enjoyable Metroidvania romp that plays well offline.

  • Price: Free, with optional in-app purchases
  • Developer: Ubisoft Entertainment

The latest Metroidvania-style Prince of Persia title to hit mobile devices is fluid, easy to learn, and is gilded with gorgeous animation. It also includes nods to the original Prince of Persia title, including mild parkour puzzling.

Sure, you will do a lot of button mashing initially (that’s how I play mobile games anyway), but there’s just enough to keep players interested, at least for the first few hours. You can also invest in the DLCs if you enjoy the base game. Best of all, the game has no issues running offline, making it a perfect play for planes.

Nobook

Clean up your Facebook Lite experience.

  • Price: Free
  • Developer: ycngmn

I only use Facebook for its Marketplace or to gather information about local natural disasters. However, others still use the platform to communicate with friends and family and receive the latest news. Nobook is a brilliant little Facebook Lite reskin that strips even more of the social network’s annoying elements, including ads.

The app can’t eliminate every irritation, so suggested posts are still prevalent. Nevertheless, it is a far more pleasant experience than using the official Lite app or, heavens forbid, the full Facebook app.

Octopi Launcher

Finally, an Android launcher that puts foldable phones first.

  • Price: Free, with optional in-app purchases
  • Developer: OctopiAppFactory

Octopi Launcher may be one of the more exciting apps launched this month. It’s still in beta, but this foldable-friendly launcher could change how we use our multi-screen devices.

For one, it offers individual layouts for each screen, something that few stock foldable launchers offer. I also quite enjoy its app drawer design, its widget stacking features, and its focus on simplicity.

As I mentioned, it’s still undergoing testing, so it’s not quite the finished article. However, this is one app to look out for in the coming months.

Flappy Bird

Relive a more infuriating time in Android gaming history.

  • Price: Free, with optional in-app purchases
  • Developer: Flappy Bird

The iconic and infuriating 2010s mobile game is back, courtesy of the Epic Games Store. While the original developer isn’t behind the new app, the new developers have done a solid job. It doesn’t include all that yucky crypto content that was rumored, either.

Nevertheless, the new experience is pretty faithful to the original. It also has new modes, several new characters, and a community aspect. Importantly, the game is free, but the developers have included in-app purchases if you want to unlock various additional content.

Chainsaw Juice King: Idle Shop

Hunt angry produce. Turn them into juice. Repeat.

  • Price: Free
  • Developer: SayGames Ltd

Sometimes I need a silly Android game to reset my brain after a long day’s work, and Chainsaw Juice King has become my methadone.

The game describes itself as “part fruit ninja, part idle farming, and part business empire,” which is pretty accurate. You hunt fruit, harvest the juice, and exchange it for cash and eventual progression. It’s a simple yet delightful title.
