The Apple Airpods Max are approaching half a decade of life, the only major news we’ve gotten about them since launch was about the new USB-C version. Other than that, news about these has been pretty scarce. However, Apple just announced lossless audio for the AirPods Max along with other neat features.
The company released a press release explaining the details of this update. Users will receive a new firmware update as part of iOS/iPadOS 18.4 and macOS Sequoia 15.4. It’s coming sometime in April, so users won’t have much time to wait.
The Apple AirPods Max will get lossless audio
If you’re an audiophile, then you’ve probably looked at these headphones. Compression is an audiophile’s kryptonite, and most of the sound sources we listen to wind up squeezing some of the details out of the audio. This is why most music lovers tend to buy expensive equipment for lossless audio.
While you’re getting amazing sound quality with the AirPods Max, you aren’t getting the highest fidelity possible. Well, after the update, you’ll be able to listen to 24-bit 48kHz audio using these headphones. In the audiophile world, that’s not super impressive, but if you want to listen to music with just a bit more definition, then this will be a nice addition.
It’s important to know that you’ll only be able to get this quality if you plug them into your device using the USB-C wire. The signal sent over Bluetooth needs to be compressed in order to keep the latency down, so there’s no true lossless Bluetooth audio yet. Even audio over Qualcomm’s aptX Lossless isn’t truly lossless.
Speaking of latency, this update also adds ultra-low latency audio to the AirPods Max. This update will significantly cut down on the time it takes for the audio to make it to your ears. So, if you’re playing games or recording music, then you’ll love this feature.
If you have the older Lightning AirPods Max, then you might not have access to these features. In the press release, Apple only referred to the USB-C variant of the headphones.
