Tesla Inc board members contacted executive search firms to kick off a formal hunt for a successor to Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the discussions.
According to the newspaper, the approaches took place about a month ago, as investors fretted about the amount of time Musk was devoting to his cost-cutting role with the US government.
At around the same time, board members told Musk he needed to spend more time at Tesla, and Musk made no objections, the newspaper said. While the board narrowed its focus to just one search firm, the current status of the succession planning isn’t clear, the Journal said.
Musk last month said he’ll pull back “significantly” from his work with the US government and pay more attention to Tesla.
