Temperature touches 36.9 degrees in Mumbai, relief likely after Friday | Mumbai News

Even as pockets of Mumbai and its neighbouring districts experienced light drizzle on Tuesday night, relief continued to elude the city as the maximum temperatures touched 36.9 degrees–which is 3.8 degrees above the normal–on Wednesday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city may experience a dip in temperatures after April 4, once the cloudy skies clear.

Despite a yellow alert sounded in the city for Wednesday, rain remained a no-show, leaving the city reeling under high temperatures throughout the day. Data furnished by the IMD showed that on Wednesday the Santacruz observatory recorded 36.9 degrees on the mercury scales while the Colaba coastal observatory recorded 34.2 degrees. This came along the heels of the city sweltering at 37.7 degrees on Tuesday, which marked a spike of 4.5 degrees for the past 24 hours.

On Tuesday night, after experiencing overcast skies and warm temperatures, several pockets of Mumbai’s suburbs alongside Thane, Navi Mumbai among other nearby areas experienced light showers. However, this failed to induce a dip in minimum temperatures as the minimum temperatures remained nearly 3 degrees above the normal at 26 degrees on Tuesday night.

In its forecast bulletin, the weather bureau has said the city is likely to experience light to moderate rain with thundershowers on Thursday, following which temperatures are expected to dip up to 31 degrees between April 4 (Friday) and 5 (Saturday). In Thane and Raigad, meanwhile, the IMD has extended the yellow alert until Thursday amid likelihood of moderate showers coupled with thunder activity, lightning and gusty winds. Meteorologists have attributed the pre-monsoon showers to a cyclonic circulation as well as a trough, which has led to the interaction of easterly and westerly winds, making conditions favourable for rain.
