Teen injured in attack during garba event at Goregaon cops

A 19-year-old teenager was assaulted by three unidentified individuals during a garba celebration as part of Navratri 2025 in Goregaon area of Mumbai on Wednesday night, a police official said on Thursday, reported the PTI.

The incident, which occurred during the ongoing Navratri festivities, gained attention of the police after a video of the attack on the victim went viral on social media.

The footage showed the victim, Jenil Barbaya, bleeding from the nose following the altercation.

According to police officials from Vanrai Police Station, the assault was triggered by a dispute that began while dancing. “One of the accused struck Barbaya with a dandiya stick, leading to an argument that escalated into a physical attack,” said the official.

Barbaya was immediately rushed to Tunga Hospital in Malad West, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the official said.

He is now reported to be out of danger, he said.

Police have recorded the statement of the victim and were in the process of registering a case against three unidentified assailants, said the official.

Further investigation in the matter was underway, he added.

Meanwhile, in an another incident in Delhi, a dispute between two groups over overtaking and loud music during Navratri processions escalated into a violent clash in central Delhi, leaving one man seriously injured from stab wounds, police said on Wednesday, reported the PTI.

The altercation occurred on Monday evening as two separate processions were returning from Kalkaji in south Delhi and travelling towards the Seelampur area in northeast Delhi.

The scuffle broke out near the Gandhi Museum on MG Road in Delhi.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Nidhin Valsan, the complainant reported that his group was carrying a sacred religious flame when another group attempted to overtake them, as per the PTI.

“The groups became embroiled in a contest over who could play louder music and who would take precedence on the road,” said the DCP in an official statement.

The disagreement soon escalated into a physical fight, during which one individual was stabbed in the chest and back. Another person, who approached the police, sustained minor injuries. Both victims were rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital in a police vehicle.

A case was registered at IP Estate Police Station, and a team was assigned to examine CCTV footage from the stretch between ITO and Rajghat and carry out local enquiries.

Investigations revealed that the attackers were from Khajoori Khas in northeast Delhi. Following raids, police arrested Kanhaiya, also known as Vivek, a 21-year-old food delivery agent, and apprehended a 17-year-old juvenile in connection with the incident.

A knife, believed to have been used in the stabbing, was recovered from Kanhaiya’s possession.
