Tata Memorial Centre signs MoU with GE Healthcare to set up cancer research centre at TMC Mumbai

Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) has signed an MoU with GE HealthCare Technologies Inc to set up a Cancer Research & Innovation Centre at TMC Mumbai. As part of this MoU, GE Healthcare will be the technology partner and TMC the clinical oncology partner.

In India, around 100 out of every 1 lakh people are diagnosed with cancer, and a report from the Cancer Registry Program states the incidence of cancer cases is estimated to increase by 12.8 per cent in 2025 compared to 2020. The alarming statistics underlines the need for precision-driven, AI-enabled solutions to advance cancer care.

CS Pramesh, Director of Tata Memorial Hospital, says: “The government is adopting a strategic, policy-driven approach to fight cancer with the establishment of day care centres, expansion of cancer care ecosystem, promoting cancer screenings and awareness programmes. However, early detection, equitable access and preventive care remains a challenge. With this partnership with GE HealthCare, we aim to enhance clinical research and promote academic engagement to transform personalised cancer care for improved outcomes cancer care.”

Chaitanya Sarawate, President and CEO, GE HealthCare South Asia, says: “In India, the estimated number of incidences of cancer cases was more than 14 lakh in 2023. With oncology as a focus for us at GE HealthCare, globally and with this partnership, we will strengthen our commitment to deliver solutions that connect every step of cancer care right from discovery, diagnosis to treatment, with the integration of advanced imaging technologies and AI-led solutions.”

The partnership aims to accelerate the development and validation of emerging technologies and digital platforms in Oncology – on AI-based applications for medical imaging, clinical workflows, hardware and software for advanced-visualisation to post-process and analyse medical images. The scope also includes vetted data annotations for application-development, enterprise applications for health informatics and management to drive optimisation and transform personalised cancer care for improved outcomes.
