Talents behind Shashtipoorthi speak about the film’s musical journey

Ahead of the release of Shashtipoorthi in theatres on May 30, it would be interesting to know what Maestro Ilaiyaraaja, lyricist Chaitanya Prasad, actor-producer Rupeysh and director Pavan Prabha have to say about their movie’s musical output.

Ilaiyaraaja, the legendary music director, speaks of Shashtipoorthi as a natural extension of his enduring philosophy—supporting new talent and letting the music speak for itself. Known for elevating the careers of directors like Bharathiraja and Mani Ratnam, he extends the same encouragement to the Shashtipoorthi team. Ilaiyaraaja’s contribution to the film comprises six remarkable songs, each a testament to his timeless genius. With a deep belief in the power of story over star value, Ilaiyaraaja lends Shashtipoorthi not just his music, but his faith.

For debut director Pavan Prabha, Shashtipoorthi is a labour of love and reverence. A child of the 1980s, Ilaiyaraaja’s music shaped his emotional and artistic world. To him, these songs are not mere tunes, but sacred hymns. Choosing Ilaiyaraaja was a non-negotiable wish, one realized with the help of producer Rupeysh. Pavan recalls pitching the story to Raja in just two minutes—and miraculously receiving an immediate nod. In a particularly nuanced moment of the film, Pavan brought in lyricist MM Keeravani to write lyrics for one of Ilaiyaraaja’s complex compositions

Actor-producer Rupeysh recounts his experience working with Ilaiyaraaja as both intimidating and transformative. The idea of approaching the maestro was daunting, but Ilaiyaraaja’s warmth and openness turned their apprehensions into trust. His willingness to work with a team of newcomers was not just generous—it was deeply validating. Rupeysh treasures the Shashtipoorthi journey as one of fortune and fulfillment.

For lyricist Chaitanya Prasad, Shashtipoorthi brought a long-cherished dream to life—writing for Ilaiyaraaja. Despite years of hoping, he only truly believed it when he sat across from the maestro in Chennai. Penning lyrics to Ilaiyaraaja’s compositions, especially in a film this musically rich, was both a challenge and a privilege. One standout experience for him was witnessing SP Charan and Yuvan Shankar Raja sing for the film. For Chaitanya, the process felt like a spiritual journey, a culmination of devotion and destiny shaped by the soul of music.

Shashtipoorthi stars Rajendra Prasad, Archana, Rupeysh, Aakanksha Singh and others.
