The Supreme Court on Monday pulled up the various sports associations operating across the country, terming them as ailing bodies, which were grappling with something the Court did not know about.
The Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh made these observations while hearing a petition filed by the Maharashtra Wrestling Association (MWA), challenging a Bombay High Court verdict that dismissed its plea against its de-affiliation by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).
Earlier on January 15, the Apex Court issued notice to the Union of India and other respondents on the petition.
A single-judge Bench of the High Court had dismissed the MWA’s application on the grounds of non-maintainability. The High Court had granted liberty to the petitioner to file an application before an appropriate Court.
The Apex Court adjourned the matter today after noting that no counsel appeared for the petitioner.
The counsel representing the respondents submitted that the petitioner directly moved the top court of the country without availing the appellate remedy in the High Court.
The Bench then observed that there was nothing like sports in these organisations.
