The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition challenging the Gujarat government’s decision to revamp the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad at an estimated cost of Rs 1,200 crore.
The Bench of Justice MM Sundresh and Justice Rajesh Bindal dismissed the Special Leave Petition filed by Tushar Gandhi, great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, challenging the Gujarat High Court order of September 2022.
The Apex Court rejected the SLP on the grounds that it was filed after nearly 2.5 years.
Filed by Tushar Gandhi, the petition termed the project a betrayal of Gandhian legacy.
It said the proposed revamping would alter the topography of the century-old ashram to the tune of Rs 1,200 crore and corrupt its ethos. The project had purportedly identified over 40 congruent buildings, which would be preserved, while around 200 buildings would either be destroyed or rebuilt.
The High Court had rejected the plea after taking into consideration the assurance given by the State of Gujarat that the existing Ashram would not be disturbed, altered or changed.
The High Court further observed that the proposed project would promote the ideas and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi and would be beneficial for mankind at large.
The revamped Gandhi Aashram would be a place for learning for mankind of all age groups, it added.
