The Supreme Court has sought a response from the Union Government on a petition filed by Dr. Subramanian Swamy, pressing for the recognition of the Ram Setu, also known as Adam’s Bridge, as a national monument. A Bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta issued notice to the Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Survey of India, directing them to place their stand on record within four weeks.

Dr. Swamy, who has pursued the matter for years, has contended that despite repeated directions and assurances, the Centre has not taken a conclusive decision on granting the structure protection under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.

Swamy recalled that in January 2023, the Solicitor General had informed the Court that the issue was under active consideration of the Ministry. The Court at that time had permitted him to make further representations, and he duly submitted detailed requests in January 2023 and again in May 2025. However, according to him, no official communication has been forthcoming.

The petition underscores the cultural and religious significance of Ram Setu, revered by millions of devotees as a sacred bridge of immense historical importance. It further asserts that the Centre has a statutory obligation to preserve such heritage sites and shield them from any form of degradation. Swamy has approached the Court under Article 32 of the Constitution, seeking judicial intervention to compel the government to act decisively.

The ma3tter will now return to the Bench after four weeks, when the Centre and the ASI are expected to present their responses, setting the stage for the next phase of judicial scrutiny on whether the iconic formation will be granted the status of a national monument.
