Storage in 70% of key Indian reservoirs down below half the capacity

The storage in India’s 161 major reservoirs dropped to 36.64 per cent of the capacity, with 70 per cent of them filled below half the level, data from the Central Water Commission (CWC) showed.

CWC’s weekly data on the major reservoirs showed that the storage declined to 66.823 billion cubic metres BCM) against the  182.375 BCM capacity. The level, however, was higher than last year and the normal (last 10 years).

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), at least 51 per cent of 715 districts in the country received deficient or no rain between March 1 and April 17, leading to sharp dip in the storage.

The 50 reservoirs of the western region were filled to 42.07 per cent of the 37.357 BCM capacity at 15.715 BCM.  The storage declined below 50 per cent in Goa this week, while it slid lower than 40 per cent in Maharashtra.
