Stand named after Rohit Sharma unveiled by his parents at Wankhede: WATCH

Rohit Sharma’s parents officially unveiled a stand named in his honour at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Friday. The tribute celebrates the remarkable journey of the 38-year-old cricketer, who recently stepped down as India’s Test captain.

Rohit was present on the occasion, visibly emotional as his parents unveiled the stand bearing his name, permanently etched into the stadium where his journey as a cricketer first began.

Rohit, who announced his retirement from T20 internationals alongside Virat Kohli after India’s triumphant World Cup campaign in Barbados last year, recently led the national team to yet another major title, the Champions Trophy in Dubai. With a five-Test tour of England scheduled for June and July, India will now require a new leader in the longest format.

Rohit last appeared in Test cricket during the Melbourne clash against Australia in 2024, where India suffered a heavy defeat by 184 runs. Due to a prolonged slump in form with the bat, he stepped aside as captain ahead of the fifth Test in Sydney. Despite a spirited effort under Jasprit Bumrah, who had earlier led the side in the series opener during Rohit`s absence for the birth of his second child, India eventually lost the series 2-1.

The story of Rohit’s rise from humble beginnings continues to inspire millions. Growing up in a financially constrained household, he was only able to pursue his education on a scholarship, as his family couldn’t afford even a modest monthly school fee. Yet, against all odds, he carved out a legendary career, particularly in white-ball cricket.

His glittering achievements include leading India to World Cup glory in 2024 and becoming the only batter in history to score three double-centuries in one-day internationals.

A five-time Indian Premier League champion with Mumbai Indians, Rohit assumed leadership of India’s white-ball teams in 2021 following Virat Kohli’s resignation. By the next year, he was entrusted with the red-ball captaincy as well, guiding India through a transformative period across all formats.

Rohit`s legacy in T20 cricket is especially storied. Having featured in every edition of the T20 World Cup, he was a part of M.S. Dhoni’s victorious squad in the inaugural 2007 tournament, before capping off his career with a second title 17 years later in 2024.
